Haiti and Afghanistan

Greeting L.A. District Family!

There is so much taking place around the world today, and so many people are in need of our prayers. I know that many of you are lifting one another up in prayer and we must continue to do so… especially today. Allow me a moment to share a few requests with you. I know that we have been praying for the many people and churches affected by the COVID cases, not only here in the states, but across the globe. Please continue to pray for one another! But here are two more needs I am sure you are already aware of:

Afghanistan Needs: I have recently read the article from Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and I would invite you to do the same. Here is a link to their website and most recent article:

I have also received this letter most recently regarding some needs for housing as a plane with refugees will soon be landing in LA from Afghanistan. Feel free to read this letter… pray… and see if you or your church will be able to provide assistance:

I am looking forward to working with you and the Nazarene community of Southern California. I am an Alumni of Point Loma Nazarene University and grew up in the church.

I am working with the US State Department and CA Senator Adam Schiff's office to help coordinate urgent aid. As I'm sure you know there are thousands of Afghans attempting to flee the Taliban. We have secured a private plane with donated funds that has the capacity to hold 300 refugees. Sen. Schiff is willing to expedite this process if we can show that local CA organizations including NGO's and Churches are willing to provide food, clothing and shelter to these people in the Los Angeles/ So Cal area. The Senator has made it clear that without these resources these people will be unable to leave Kabul.

It would be wonderful if the Nazarene church or local congregants would be willing to sponsor a number of individuals or to donate supplies. This link is a simple sign up form to help us quickly understand what organizations are willing to do or donate. https://forms.gle/ZTRofCPfykA4bZ8g9

Please forward this message to any potential person or organizations who may be interested in helping these desperate people. I can be reached at lawlady@gmail.com

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Josie Dayton

Haiti Needs: Many of you are aware of the earthquake that hit Haiti this past week. Many people have died in the quake, and now they are being hit by the tropical storm, “Grace”. I have spoken with a close friend I have who is living in Haiti and she has shared with me that there are many needs today in this country. Please be in prayer for the many who have been affected by the earthquake and now the storm.

I love you all and I am praying for you as well!

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Saturday morning, causing widespread destruction in an area still recovering from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Nearly 1,300 people have died, a number that will likely rise. At the same time, Tropical Depression Grace is dumping rain on the country, bringing fears of landslides or contaminated drinking water.

The country was already facing a double crisis caused by unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Church of the Nazarene has four districts in the area near the epicenter, two of which are known to have sustained significant damage and one that has not been able to make a report yet. At least four churches were destroyed in a southern district, and one pastor has lost his house. One district superintendent says that the quake killed one church member, and the areas of Les Cayes, Leprete, Pestel, and Jeremie were hit especially hard.

People are grieving, traumatized, and afraid.

Medical personnel and aid workers are rushing to get to the affected areas before the storm makes travel more difficult. Many people near the epicenter are sleeping outside out of fear of the frequent aftershocks or because their homes were destroyed. One Nazarene district is reporting a great need for shelter, and if the churches are safe, the district superintendent hopes to open them as shelter space for the community.

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, local Nazarene churches, and partner organizations are preparing to mobilize as soon as the initial assessment of need is clearer.

How You Can Help

Pray
Please pray for those facing the devastation left by the earthquake, especially those who have lost loved ones and homes. Pray for those who are experiencing trauma after the major earthquake 11 years ago. Pray for the swift and safe delivery of supplies, including shelters, food, and medicine. Pray for those who are most vulnerable, including senior adults, individuals with disabilities, and people living in poverty. Pray for church leaders and churches responding to the needs around them.
